(Jason from the Wake Up Call is a HUGE fan of CBS’s Big Brother.  If you’ve never watched Big Brother, this blog will give you the info you need to watch the show without being confused!  It’s also a great place to hear Jason’s thoughts on the summer’s HOTTEST show!)

It was a few minutes before 7:00 PM.  The TV was still on ESPN because my wife and I had just watched Lebron James announce that he’ll be playing basketball in Miami next season.  There was a commercial for (frequent Wake Up Call Sponsor) Vitamin Water.  While my ears heard the Vitamin Water commercial, in my head, I heard something different.

Dun, Dun…dun dun…dun dun….

I know that’s not the theme song to CBS’s Big Brother, but if your summer plans always include plopping down in front of the television to watch the houseguests, you are familiar with that little tune.

Let the drama begin!  Dun, dun….dun, dun…..dun, dun…

This season on Big Brother we have a unique twist.  The twist is that there is a saboteur living in the Big Brother house trying to sabotage the game for the other players. Now, I’m sure there are a few people who will say that Big Brother took the saboteur concept from the failed ABC reality show “The Mole”.  To those people I say, “read a mystery book”.  The concept isn’t new.  It’s just new to Big Brother.  Let’s move on.

On the surface, Big Brother is a silly reality show full of hot, young people.  To many people Big Brother is nothing more than MTV’s “the Real World”.  If you’ve watched the show, you know how ridiculous the comparisons are, because there is as much, if not more strategy to the Big Brother game than almost any other reality game show on television.  Yes, that includes Survivor.

Yes, Survivor has players living in deplorable conditions while dealing with the stresses of bad weather and starvation, but on that show, if you are weak, you are usually doomed for failure.  For the record, I love Survivor.

Big Brother is similar, but different.  Big Brother is a human chess game.  Yes, there are physical challenges, but the most important part of the Big Brother game is social.  Big Brother is a game that we’ve all played in our own way.

When you were in middle school, did you ever do something to try to fit in?  When you were in high school, did you ever laugh at something that wasn’t funny because everyone else was laughing and you didn’t want to stand out?  Did you get picked on?  Did you hate the football players or the cheerleaders?  Did you think you were smarter than they were?  Did you secretly wish the popular kids would fall from grace in your school?  Do you have a job where an ass kisser almost got the promotion, but you did because unbeknownst to the ass kisser, you were personally friends with the boss? If you ever did any of those things, you’ve played Big Brother.

Big Brother is a social game where every move you make might keep you in the game one week longer, or send you out the door in the blink of an eye.  If you like drama and are a fan of people watching, and you don’t watch Big Brother, you are totally missing out on one of the biggest guilty pleasure television shows of the year!

As this season kicked off, we met the houseguests.  We’ve got the standard Big Brother players.  The gay guy, the girl (or girls) with big boobs, the good looking hick, the sweet blonde southern girl, the smart guy who doesn’t want people to know he’s smart, the girl who plans on using her sexuality to win the game, the cute guy with smile and a brain the size of a tooth, and the hot guy who all the girls drool over, but who is already being lusted over by the gay guy.

This season we also have very religious Jewish houseguest, named Andrew, who wears a yarmulke and brought his own pot to make sure he can cook his kosher food.  He’s also a podiatrist, but he is lying and pretending to be an out of work, day trader who is now forced to sell shoes.  It will be interesting to see how the houseguests respect, or don’t respect his religious beliefs.  If a houseguest tried to spike Andrew’s kosher food with bacon, would Big Brother step in and stop it, or let another houseguest disrespect his religion?

Also this year, we had a bit of Jersey Shore influence!  We have Enzo! Unlike most of the Jersey Shore cast, Enzo is actually from New Jersey!  No, I don’t know him!  He’s an Italian guy from New Jersey.  He’s going to say a lot of funny things, and he’s going to fly off the handle very quickly!  He should be great to watch this year.  He’s not a stereotype.  He’s from North Jersey.  He’s the real deal.  Pauly D is a stereotype.  Jesus, he’s from Rhode Island!  Enzo…now he’s where the Jersey Stereotype comes from!  Enjoy him this season!

The stabber twist is a lot of fun, but in typical Big Brother fashion, they are totally screwing it up!  It’s only lasting five weeks and they are telling us who the saboteur is after only one week!!  I can’t be alone here when I say that it’s more fun to try and figure out who the saboteur is than to watch him/her screw around with the game.  Am I wrong?

It’s going to be another fun season of Big Brother.  To wrap up this first entry into my first Big Brother 12 blog, I’ll make my picks for this season.

My early guess for the saboteur:  Andrew.  If I’m right, this isn’t going to be good for the horrible Jewish stereotype that “Jews are sneaky”, but his behavior on the first episode had me shaking my head.  Really Andrew?  The houseguests are already suspicious of each other, and you decide to mess with them when the lights were out?  Really?  What had me most suspicious?  The way he dove behind the couch and pretended that he wasn’t tossing pillows.  If you are playing a practical joke, come clean.  He seemed like he dove behind the couch because he was afraid he was about to get caught!  (Backup pick: Kathy, the deputy Sheriff from Arkansas)

My first prediction for the winner of Big Brother 12: Ragan.  Gay guys have had a very tough time with Big Brother in the past.  I don’t think it has anything to do with being gay.  It’s just that the gay guy always seems to make a bad decision about ¾ of the way into the game.  Why do I pick Ragan?  He’s a professor that teaches communications.  With that level of education, he must have some sort of training when it comes to reading body language.  He should also be good at manipulation.  If he has good street smarts as well, Ragan could be a force in the Big Brother house. (Backup pick: Brendon, the swim coach from Riverside California)
